Your First Notes

Open Strings First

Before pressing any frets, let's make clean sound from the open strings. Pick each string individually with a downstroke. The pick should strike the string firmly but smoothly — not too hard (harsh, buzzy) and not too soft (quiet, undefined).

Go slowly: string 6, then 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Each note should ring clearly until you play the next one. If a string sounds dull or muted, check that your fretting hand isn't accidentally touching it.

Fretting Your First Notes

Now let's press some frets. Start with string 1 (high E), fret 1:

1. Place the tip of your index finger just behind the first fret wire (between the nut and the first metal strip)
2. Press down firmly enough that the string contacts the fret
3. Pick the string

You should hear a clear note (F). If it buzzes, you might be pressing too close to the fret wire, not hard enough, or your finger might be touching an adjacent string.

The sweet spot is just behind the fret wire — not on top of it, not in the middle of the gap between frets. Just behind gives you the cleanest sound with the least effort.

Notes on the First String

Here are the first few notes on string 1 (high E):

- Open = E
- Fret 1 = F
- Fret 2 = F# / Gb
- Fret 3 = G
- Fret 5 = A
- Fret 7 = B
- Fret 8 = C
- Fret 10 = D
- Fret 12 = E (one octave higher than open)

You don't need to memorise all of these now. Just notice the pattern: each fret raises the pitch by a half step (semitone).

One-Finger Melody

Let's play a recognisable melody using just the first string and your index finger. This is the opening of "Ode to Joy" by Beethoven, simplified:

Pick each string one at a time, letting each ring.

Open E, then F, F#, G. Use your index finger for fret 1, middle for 2, ring for 3.

Ode to Joy (simplified, string 1 only)

G|------------------------------------------------|
D|------------------------------------------------|
A|------------------------------------------------|
E|------------------------------------------------|
A recognisable tune using just one string! Play slowly and evenly.

Tips

  • Press just behind the fret wire — this is the cleanest spot
  • Use your fingertips, not the flat pad of your finger
  • One clean note is better than rushing through ten buzzy ones
  • If a note buzzes, check: are you pressing hard enough? Is your finger in the right spot?

Practice Exercises

  1. Play each open string from 6 to 1, then 1 to 6 — listen for clean, clear sound
  2. Fret notes 0-1-2-3 on each string, one at a time, making each ring cleanly
  3. Play the Ode to Joy tab until you can get through it without stopping
  4. Try creating your own one-string melody using frets 0, 1, 3, and 5
