Where to Go From Here
Practice routines and continued learning
Congratulations
You've completed 70 lessons covering everything from holding the guitar to advanced improvisation, chord-melody playing, and performance technique. That's a serious achievement.
But here's the truth every guitarist discovers: the more you learn, the more you realise there is to learn. Guitar is a lifelong journey. The difference between you now and a month from now is entirely determined by what you do next.
Building a Practice Routine
A structured daily routine is worth more than sporadic long sessions. Here's a template:
5 minutes: Warm-up (chromatic exercise, spider, stretching)
10 minutes: Technique focus (whatever you're currently improving — picking, legato, bends)
10 minutes: Theory/knowledge (scales, modes, arpeggios, fretboard navigation)
10 minutes: Repertoire (songs you're learning or maintaining)
10 minutes: Creative (improvising, writing, experimenting)
5 minutes: Cool-down (play something fun and easy)
That's 50 minutes. Adjust the times to fit your schedule — even 20 focused minutes daily beats 3 hours once a week.
Continued Learning Paths
Depending on your interests, deep-dive into:
Blues: study the masters (B.B. King, SRV, Albert King). Learn turnarounds, shuffles, and how to make 5 notes say everything.
Jazz: learn standards, voice leading, chord substitutions. Study Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall.
Classical: learn proper technique, read standard notation, study Segovia, John Williams, Ana Vidovic.
Fingerstyle: explore percussive fingerstyle, arrangements, altered tunings. Study Tommy Emmanuel, Andy McKee.
Rock/Metal: master alternate picking, sweep picking, tapping. Study Paul Gilbert, Guthrie Govan, John Petrucci.
Songwriting: learn form, lyric writing, arrangement. Study how your favourite songs are constructed.
The guitar is an infinitely deep instrument. Enjoy the journey — and keep using our tab and song generators to fuel your practice!
Tips
- Consistency beats intensity — 20 minutes daily is better than 3 hours weekly
- Always warm up before serious practice
- Balance technique practice with playing music you enjoy
- Record yourself regularly and listen back critically
- Play with other musicians whenever possible — it accelerates learning faster than anything
Practice Exercises
- Design your own 30-minute daily practice routine using the template above
- Set 3 specific guitar goals for the next month
- Record yourself playing something today — compare it to a recording from when you started
- Find another guitarist and jam together
- Keep playing, keep learning, keep creating
