Sweep Picking Basics

Economy of motion, 3-string sweeps

25 min

What is Sweep Picking?

Sweep picking (or economy picking) means using a single continuous pick stroke across multiple strings — like a slow controlled strum, but hitting one note per string in sequence. Instead of alternating down-up for each note, you "sweep" the pick in one direction across the strings.

This is the most efficient way to play arpeggios at speed. It's used extensively in metal, neoclassical, and fusion.

The Technique

The key is synchronisation between hands. Your pick sweeps across the strings while your fretting hand lifts each finger immediately after the note sounds, muting the string. Each note should ring individually, not blur into a chord.

Start with 3-string sweeps. Pick down across strings 4-3-2, one note each, with a slight "fall" motion. Each note sounds and is muted before the next one rings. It should sound like a fast arpeggio, not a strum.

Speed comes from the sweeping motion being smooth and the muting being precise. If notes ring together, slow down and focus on the left-hand muting.

Tab Examples

3-string Am sweep (down)

e|------------|
B|----5-------|
G|---5--------|
D|--7---------|
A|------------|
E|------------|
Single downstroke across 3 strings. Each note rings alone, not together.

3-string sweep up and down

e|------------------|
B|----5---5---5-----|
G|---5---5---5------|
D|--7---7---7-------|
A|------------------|
E|------------------|
Down sweep (7-5-5), up sweep (5-5-7), repeat. Keep it slow and clean.

Tips

  • This is NOT a fast strum — each note must ring individually
  • Left hand muting is just as important as the right hand sweep
  • Start at impossibly slow tempos until the coordination is clean
  • Master 3-string sweeps before attempting 5 or 6 string sweeps

Practice Exercises

  1. Practice the 3-string down sweep at 40 BPM — each note must ring individually
  2. Add the up sweep — the pick reverses direction for the return
  3. Practice the muting: fret each note, then lift your finger immediately after picking
  4. Try the same sweep shape moved to different fret positions
